The Conch Republic Beckons

Key West –Paradise Found or Paradise Lost?

A lot of people are quitting their job and moving to Key West. Why? Why now?

I did that 27 years ago, and although I stayed only a short while in this tiny 1X2 mile slice of tropical paradise, the memory has stayed vivid. So here I am again, thinking about quitting or moving my job to The Keys.

The bloody place is tropical (AKA humid), so forget going out in the heat of the day if you are allergic to sun or burn easily like all those snowbird tourists. I cope by having a change of clothes and a dozen interchangeable tank tops or sleeveless shirts in my tote.

The silly place has run amok with scooters and electric cards driven by lost snowbirds; there’s a scooter/bike rental shop and moped hospital on every street corner. Much as I love a good scooter ride to the beach, you can hardly find a place to park your bike safely.

Guess I’m getting some new walking shoes if I do move here and will sell the car on the mainland before I join the Conch Republic!
